Design Professionals - Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions below may be specific to the Florida area. If you would like to speak to a lift specialist in your area, we can put you in touch with one. Applications may vary, so be sure to review the details of your particular application with us.

When can I use a lift instead of an elevator?

For residential applications, you have the option of utilizing a vertical platform lift anytime the vertical travel required is 14 feet or less. Vertical lifts are particularly preferred in outdoor applications because they can be manufactured in aluminum and weather treated. A folding inclined platform lift can be utilized for travel up existing stairways when there are space limitations associated with a vertical platform lift.

In the state of Florida, you can use a folding inclined platform lift for a variety of commercial applications, or a vertical platform lift for second-story access of up to 14 feet, in lieu of an elevator. Folding inclined platform lifts have almost no limits. For example, St. Leo’s College installed an inclined lift to service five flights of stairs, at 1/5 the cost of an elevator.

How much do lifts cost?

Depending on the size of stairway and optional features, residential seat lifts for straight stairways range between $2500 and $5000 (most commonly between $3,000 and $3500.) Curving stairways can be double the cost.

Residential elevators range between $11,000 and $20,000, again depending on travel distance and features.

Folding inclined platform lifts are priced based on length and number of turns. The average cost of a short, straight lift should be about $15,000 and a typical turn-back stair about $25,000-$30,000. A major advantage of the folding inclined lift is that little or no additional work is required. They are custom designed to fit your existing stairway.

Pricing for Vertical lifts starts at approximately $5500 for a short residential unit, and falls between $8500 and $20,000, depending on travel distance and number of stops.

How long does it take to get a lift installed?

If your stairway is typical, residential stairway chairlifts can be stock items and shipped immediately, with installation in generally one day. Curving stairway chairlifts are custom designed and generally ship in about four weeks.

Residential elevators, vertical platform lifts, and inclined platform lifts are subject to supply and demand. In my 10+ years of experience, delivery times have ranged from two weeks to 16 weeks. Installation time is typically one to three days.

How big is a lift?

Vertical lifts are roughly 5’ X 5’, and residential elevators are slightly smaller or larger, depending on your needs.

Inclined lifts fold up against the wall, protruding 10" to 16", depending on the chosen mounting technique.
